Okkervil & Titus - What a Dynamic Duo!
by Opie1 on 2011-06-13The Phoenix Concert Theatre - TorontoRating: 5 out of 5The Phoenix was absolutely 'a rocking and a jumping' last Friday night with an exhilarating triple bill of outstanding US indie bands. The second act - New Jersey's Titus Andronicus - very nearly stole the show from (Texans via NY?) Okkervil River...with a blistering 40-45 minute, punk-fueled set of extremely literate songs mostly from their latest CD - 'The Monitor' (a definite best of 2010 album). Live on stage Titus' angry, sonic blitzkrieg and non-stop energy sounds like a mix of the Clash, The Pogues, Green Day & Dropkick Murphy's at their very best. Headliners Okkervil River, however, did not disappoint despite what seemed a slightly patchy start (must be hard to follow Titus A). Once frontman Will Sheff really got his stage persona going...the band went through its paces with an amazing array of great material (including Sheff's wonderfully cinematic lyrics) from most of OR's various CD's, especially some classic gems from 'The Stage Names' - complete with multi-instrumental accompaniment. Great sound and outstanding musicianship all around during a just under 2 hour set, including encores, and special kudos to the lovely female lead guitarist whose name I need to know.

Wonderful. truly. despite being next to the "mosh"-ish pit and nearly getting trampled, i so enjoyed the entire show. great openers. beautiful set list. Will Sheff is a prince among men.
