About

Kamasi Washington is a multi-instrumentalist, composer and bandleader born and raised in Los Angeles. His three bodies of work to date--The Epic; Harmony of Difference, an EP originally commissioned for the 2017 Whitney Biennial; and Heaven and Earth--are among the most acclaimed of this century. As Told To G/D Thyself, his short film companion to Heaven and Earth, debuted at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival to widespread acclaim. In 2020, Washington scored the Michelle Obama documentary Becoming, earning Emmy and Grammy nominations for his work. Also in 2020, Washington co-founded the supergroup Dinner Party with longtime friends and collaborators Terrace Martin, Robert Glasper and 9th Wonder--their EP Dinner Party (Dessert) was subsequently nominated for a Grammy for Best Progressive R&B Album. In 2021, Washington contributed a cover of Metallica's "My Friend of Misery" to the band's Metallica Blacklist covers project. Washington has toured the world over and collaborated and shared stages with Kendrick Lamar, Florence + the Machine, Herbie Hancock--with whom he will curate the Hollywood Bowl Jazz Fest for the second year in a row--and many more. His new album Fearless Movement, inspired by dance and the birth of his first daughter, is out May 3rd on Young.

    Kamasi rocked!

by Aydin on 2024-05-11History - Toronto

Kamasi and his band were awesome, talented, progressive and kind. A pleasure to listen. History is a great venue to watch these talented people. Crew is always helpful and lots of bartenders to ensure you are served quickly.

Kamasi took us to year 3000 and back

by Jams on 2024-05-10History - Toronto

What a wonderful experience! Performance was incredible, the open standing area allowed a comfortable and casual atmosphere. Was so close I could feel not just the positive energy radiate off ALL the performers but seeing all the smiles on everybody’s faces really elevated the experience. Solos were pure insanity and the on-the-fly off-the-cuff improv-ing was so good it was hard to go back to hearing the album in my car speakers during the ride home. Best thing I can say is, when the concert ended my friend who I dragged along and didn’t know Kamasi before the show simply said “I’m converted” and proceeded to drag me to the merch table. Crowd was great Venue was great Performance was insanely wonderful.

    Spiritual and Musicianship Explosion

    by Scott W. on 2024-05-10History - Toronto

Kamasai Washington and his stellar band blew the roof off of History. The very palpable postive vibrations and stunning musicianship was next, next level. Drummer Tony Austin and bassist Miles Mosley were superhuman, taking virtuosity and inventiveness beyond the stratosphere, as did all the players on stage. Walking out of the venue after the show, it felt like I had a blood tranfusion of some exlixir of soul and universal vibration.

    Kamasi always Amazing

by AI on 2024-05-10History - Toronto

Once again experience Kamasi Washington live performance is Amazing experience. He is the best saxophone player alive in the world and his concerts are relax structured that make you feel like his playing just for you at his own studio. However, I found the History venue needs to get Acoustic features to improve how the sounds travels around the venue.
