About

Opera Atelier is North America’s premier period opera/ballet company, producing the opera, ballet and drama of the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries. While drawing upon the aesthetics and ideals of the period, Opera Atelier goes beyond “reconstruction” and infuses each production with an inventive theatricality that resonates with modern audiences. Led by founding artistic directors Marshall Pynkoski and Jeannette Lajeunesse Zingg since 1985, Opera Atelier has garnered acclaim for its performances at home as well as in the United States, Europe and Asia.

Outstanding from Every Point of View!

by Tom on 2023-11-08Elgin and Winter Garden Theatre Centre - Toronto

This was one of the most engaging and polished Opera Atelier's performances I have seen over the years. One has only to compare the directors' efforts to create a suitably authentic, yet currently accessible experience with the efforts of similar arts organizations sampled online to see how superior Opera Atelier's are from every point of view. The musical direction, sets, singing, dancing and acting in this production were superb. Best wishes for continued success over the years!

    Very pleasant time

Good show overall. The smoke effect was a bit too much. Orpheus sounded a bit weak on some parts...

    A joyful performance

by Baroque music lover on 2023-10-29Elgin and Winter Garden Theatre Centre - Toronto

It was a beautiful , emotional , entertaining performance . Very interesting to see a lot of classical dance movements in this baroque Opera . Moments of castrato notes and passages were as convincing as expected.

    Dido and Aeneas

by RZ on 2022-10-27Elgin and Winter Garden Theatre Centre - Toronto

Great show and a wonderful performance by Measha Brueggergosman-Lee. It was wonderful to once again seeing a live performance. One concern is that face masks were not required. While I fully understand that in the province and the city face masks are no longer a requirement, and I agree with the vast majority of people that face masks are tiresome and annoying, it really was disconcerting to see so many people without masks all the while coughing and hacking on the people around them in the tightly packed seating. The safety of the audience needs to take precedence despite the annoyance.

    Incredible Opera Experience!

by Alex on 2022-10-26Elgin and Winter Garden Theatre Centre - Toronto

Dido and Aeneas was such an incredible performance I was absolutely in awe of the talent. The dancers as well as the singers, the set design and costumes made such an amazing show. I would 100% recommend you to see a show from this company. It was a real pleasure to be privy to seeing this show!!

    Tragic and fun

by Handel lover on 2022-10-26Elgin and Winter Garden Theatre Centre - Toronto

While Meghan Lindsay wasn’t my favourite ever Dido, she sang the role beautifully. I was hoping for more strength of character. Colin Ainsworth was a solid Aeneas and he balanced well a depth of feeling with a blind sense of duty. Measha Bruggesgossman was fabulously evil with wonderful comic sense of timing giving us satisfying schadenfreude. Chorus was good. The real stars of the show for me were Tafelmusik players. They’re playing with polished attention to detail and ornamentation they set they mood and gave the show vitality and dynamism.

The Elgin theatre was beautiful, the staff friendly and helpful , the pre opera chat informative , the staging simple and effective and the cast particularly Dido , the Sorceress and her minions excellent.
